2010: Welcome Cosmetology, Care of the Elderly and Autotronics

The Barbados Vocational Training Board will be starting 2010 with a difference as new courses are added to the current offering. The courses are Cosmetology, Care of the Elderly and Autotronics, which will be run as a module within our Skills Training Auto Mechanics programme.
Cosmetology
In the first year training will be done in the class room with students learning the basics in hair styling, cutting, colouring and treating. In the second and third years of the course, students will work in a salon where they will apply much of what they learnt in the first year of training.
Care of the Elderly
In a recent statement on radio M.P Hamilton Lashley made the point that by the year 2020 senior citizens will constitute 50% percent of the Barbadian population. Such a statistic suggests there must be more persons who are willing and able to take care of these aging people. This course is designed to train participants to take care of aging persons. Course instructor Shirley Bennett believes that it is important that aging people remain active and have someone to talk to.
Autotronics
‘It will be impossible to be a 21st century mechanic without some knowledge of autotronics!’ These are the words of Mr. Bushell, the course demonstrator of the Autotronics module. He says that every car being imported into Barbados is equipped with a computer controlled engine management system which detects engine problems as they occur. The job of the autotronic technician is to use the engine management system to diagnose problems and make recommendations.
