I enjoyed being involved in the Apprenticeship Programme – both the theoretical and practical component. The experience was worthwhile, as I was able to acquire a skill and also further my studies.

The Apprenticeship Programme has been a good experience. I learned a lot at Structural Systems during the on-the-job training. Within three years, I began as an Apprentice Welder and have become an Operator, by gaining experience in welding, fabrication, and by receiving Autocad training. I enjoyed the theoretical training at the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic. The teachers were helpful and kind, especially Mr. Ian Harvey.

My experience at Structural Systems has been a positive one. My supervisors were helpful throughout the practical training. The Apprenticeship Programme allowed me to further my welding studies, more specifically at the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic. Currently, I am attending at the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic where I am studying Electrical Installation. My manager, supervisor and my workmates at Structural Systems are supporting me in my studies.
I would advise any youngster, who wants to acquire skills to apply at the Barbados Vocational Training Board and attend the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic. My advice would be get a skill and “keep off the block”.

I found my apprenticeship to be beneficial and I gained experience in the Autobody trade. I would recommend the programme to others. Having completed my Apprenticeship, I continue to work as an Autobody Technician at Collision One.

The Skills Training experience for me was a very delightful one even though it had its challenges. Although I knew a little about mechanics the course Automotive Vehicle Engineering assisted me to understand on a broader scale what mechanics is really about, both the practical and the theory.
At the end of the course I was given the opportunity to begin a job attachment at Nassco Ltd where I have been employed for the last three and a half years.

Going to the Barbados Vocational Training Board to sign up for a Plumbing course, was one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life. I always thought you had to be a teenager or in your early twenties, to be able to sign up for training or even to be considered, to do an apprenticeship. But five years later, I am living proof that it is never too late to change careers completely. I am now self-employed and operating my own plumbing company; I’m never out of work.

Thanks to the Skills Training and the Barbados Vocational Training Board, I have acquired the skills to earn an income both in a company and on my own. If you are going to work for someone – choose your own boss – and if you are going to work for yourself, prepare to work hard, long hours.
